Leventhal is an experienced fundraising professional who leads the San Jose Museum of Art development, membership, and facility rental programs. Prior to his current position Leventhal was Director of Development at The Exploratorium in San Francisco. He was a Deputy Director at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco for five years and before that Leventhal served as Director of Development and Marketing at the Judah L. Magnes Museum, now a part of the University of California, Berkeley. On arrival in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2002, Leventhal worked successfully for a year as a fundraising consultant for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco at the tail-end of the Campaign for the New de Young. Before moving west, James worked in various capacities – curatorial, collections and development – at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1994-2002). Leventhal holds an MBA in management and museum studies from John F. Kennedy University, Berkeley; an MA in art history and museum studies from The City College, City University of New York; and a BS in studio art and anthropology from New York University. He currently serves on the board of the Western Museums Association.
